Welcome to the Men’s Section at Lexden Wood. The section is run by captain Dave Gooding, who is happy to hear from any member wanting to get more involved in club competitions.
Weekend Competitions
The Men’s Section plays most Saturdays and Sundays. Each weekend typically has two formats running across the two days:
- The Swindle - a weekly social competition open to all. Sign up on the swindle sheet in the starter hut on the 1st tee. Entry is £3 cash on the day. Prizes go to the winners, plus a twos pot shared between anyone lucky enough to card a 2. You must also log your score on England Golf for verification.
- Club Competitions - on the alternate day to the swindle. These include medals, Stableford rounds, Texas Scrambles, 4-Ball Better Ball and more. Book your place via BRS - entry is normally £5. Certain special events, such as the Club Championships, include food and carry a higher entry fee.
England Golf Handicap
To enter club competitions you need a handicap registered with England Golf. If you don’t have one yet, the team can help you get set up - just get in touch with the captain and he will talk you through it.
Senior Section
If you are aged 55 or over, similar competitions are also run by the Senior Section on Tuesdays and Thursdays. See the Seniors tile below for more information.

Ladies Tuesday Social
Calling all lady golfers aged 20-40 - join our relaxed group coaching session on the first Tuesday of each month, 12-1pm. All standards are welcome, including complete beginners.
After the session, stay for a coffee or a glass of wine in the restaurant and get to know some of the other ladies at the club.
Bi-Annual Ladies & Seniors Match
Our bi-annual Ladies and Seniors match is a firm favourite in the calendar - a friendly, fun day out on the course with 39 players taking part this year.
The format is ‘The Waltz’: each group consists of one lady and two Senior men. On the first hole, only one score counts; on the second hole, two scores count; and on the third hole, all three scores count. This pattern repeats across all 18 holes - it keeps things lively and means every player has a real part to play throughout the round.
After the golf, everyone heads back to the clubhouse for a sandwich and chips lunch, followed by the presentation of prizes. Always a brilliant day - we hope to see you there!
Playing Days
- Mondays - meet at 8.30am, tee times normally 09.00 - 10.00.
- Wednesdays - Roll Up mornings, tee times around 10.00 - 10.30 for 9 holes or more.
Add your name to the BRS bookings each week so the club knows who will be playing.
Club Competitions
Monthly competitions are Medal and Stableford, detailed on the fixture list. Entry and booking is via BRS from your phone.
- £5 for trophy competitions
- £4 for other competitions
- £3 for 9-hole competitions (winter months)
There is no obligation to play in competitions - you are welcome to join just for social golf at any time.
Monthly Medal
A Strokeplay competition - count all strokes on each hole (Gross) and deduct your handicap to give your final result (Nett). Played once a month.
Monthly Stableford
You score points on each hole based on your handicap. Less arduous than Medal - if a hole isn’t going well you can pick up and start fresh on the next. Played once a month.
Pars & Birdies
An annual competition run throughout the year. A prize is awarded to the lady achieving the most birdies. The par competition is open to those with handicaps over 30. Advise the Lady Captain or the appointed committee member so your scores can be recorded.
Ladies Championship
Held in July / August each year, with prizes for gross score (Club Champion) and nett results. To qualify you must have played in at least 2 Medal and 2 Stableford competitions since January of that year. Those who have not qualified may play in one round on the Monday for the Championship Plate.
Mixed Events
There are several mixed events during the year - see the Fixture List or notice boards in Reception for dates.
External Competitions
The Ladies’ Section is involved in several external competitions throughout the season. Details are on the Fixture List and Notice Board. Players and caddies are always required - speak to the Lady Captain for more information.
Representing the Club
There are varied opportunities to represent Lexden Wood. Friendly matches are arranged against other clubs at home and away, and many clubs organise Open competitions. Members are encouraged to enter as many as they wish. Information on these events is available from the Golf Empire website.
Club Colours
Green Polo Shirts and Navy / Royal Jackets & V-neck jumpers, with white shorts / skorts / trousers in summer and navy trousers in winter. These should be worn when representing the club - not mandatory but encouraged. The club logo can be added to your shirt or jacket; ask the Lady Captain.
Handicaps
A WHS handicap is required to play in competitions and matches (not needed for social events). To achieve a Handicap Index, submit 3 score cards from rounds played with - and signed by - a handicapped member of the club. Download the My England Golf app to manage your handicap and use it as proof at other courses.
Staying Up to Date
Competition dates and information are notified by email, WhatsApp group and a monthly newsletter from the club.
