Why are weddings so expensive - and how do you keep costs down?
The average UK wedding now costs well over £20,000. A significant chunk of that goes to venue hire, and much of the venue cost is a “wedding premium” - the same room and catering that a corporate event or birthday party would pay a fraction of, simply because the word wedding appears in the booking.
At Lexden Wood, we do not do that. A wedding booking is priced the same as any other event. You choose the room, you choose the format, and you pay the same rate as everyone else. The only thing that makes your day feel like a wedding is what you bring to it.
The single biggest lever: dry hire
If you want the maximum control over cost and creativity, dry hire is the most powerful tool available. You hire the room - and only the room - and you bring everything else yourself. That means your own caterers, your own bar arrangement, your own florist, your own DJ or band, your own tables if you want something specific. The venue provides the licensed space; you provide everything that makes it yours.
Lexden Wood offers dry hire of the Half Suite (up to 75 guests, from £250 Mon - Thu) and the Full Suite (up to 200 guests, from £500 Mon - Thu, from £700 Fri and Sat). There is no food minimum and no wedding mark-up. Bar staff are included when a minimum bar spend is met - we will advise on the figure based on your numbers and type of event.

Choosing the right day and time
Saturday afternoons are the most in-demand - and most expensive - slots across every venue in Colchester. If you can be flexible on your day, a Friday evening or a weekday wedding brings the room rate down significantly and often means your suppliers charge less too. Registrars, photographers and caterers all tend to price weekdays below weekends.
A lunchtime start on a weekday or Sunday can also keep the bar bill lower, and a shorter celebration from 1pm to 7pm is often more relaxed - and more affordable - than an all-day format that runs until midnight.
The setting: parkland on the edge of Colchester
Lexden Wood sits on Bakers Lane, Colchester - a few minutes from the city centre but surrounded by mature Essex parkland. The function suite looks out over the course. There is ample parking, the venue is fully licensed, and there are no noise-sensitive neighbours directly adjoining the building.
It is not a blank white box and it is not a hotel ballroom. It is a proper, working club with a relaxed atmosphere and a setting that photographs well without requiring thousands of pounds in venue dressing to look good.
Tips for keeping your Colchester wedding affordable
- Choose a weekday or off-peak date - room rates, supplier fees and registrar costs are all typically lower
- Dry hire and source your own caterers - local caterers are often significantly cheaper than in-house hotel catering
- Keep the guest list tight for the meal - invite more people to the evening reception than the sit-down meal to keep catering costs proportionate
- Set a realistic drinks budget early - a tab with a cap is much easier to manage than an open bar
- Ask venues directly what the wedding premium is - the honest answer tells you a lot about who you are dealing with
- Consider a shorter day - a 4-hour celebration is often as memorable as an 8-hour one, at roughly half the bar and staffing cost
